How To Change A Tyre.

Have you ever wondered how to change a tyre or have you ever had to and not known how?

Well here you can learn how to by reading this step by step guide. Knowing how to change a tyre might come in handy in the future when you are out driving on your own, you never know when you will need to.

Equipment.

Before you try to change a tyre make sure you have everything you need, which is ;

A car jack, a wrench, a couple of wheel chocks, a wheel nut key, your car handbook and a torch if you’re changing it at night.

When you know you have everything, check your spare tyre is in good condition and then you’re ready to go.

Stabilise The Vehicle.

Get your wheel chocks and put them in place to prevent the car from rolling while it’s jacked up. Your chocks should be diagonally opposite the wheel that you are changing, you can also put chocks on the tyre next to the one you have put them on already if you wanted to, for extra security.

If you have no chocks, you can use bricks or a large plank of wood too.

Jacking The Car.

Take a look in your handbook to see where the best place to position the jack is. If you can’t find the information where to place it, put it at the lifting point closest to the wheel that you’re changing.

When you’ve done this, check the head works properly and then extend the jack slowly until vehicle has risen slightly but all wheels are still on the floor.

Wheel Nuts.

Loosen the wheel nuts while the wheels are on ground still.

Do this using the wheel wrench you have, apply it to the wheel nut and turn it left to loosen it. When it’s loose enough to remove by hand, move onto the next one but do not remove it yet.

Removing The Tyre.

Now that the nuts are loosened, slowly jack the car up fully until it’s around 10cm off the ground. When you have done this remove the wheel nuts by hand while holding the weight of the tyre with your knee.

You should take the top nut off last and then the tyre should slide out.

Spare Tyre.

Hold the spare tyre in place and reattach the wheel nuts, just secure them by hand right now.

When you have done this, slowly lower the jack until the wheels are just touching the ground.

When the wheels are touching the ground, tighten up the wheel nuts using the wrench again, turning it to the right his time.

Lower The Car.

When you have done all of the above slowly lower the car back to the ground fully.

When the car is on the ground fully, recheck the nuts are on tightly and if you have a tyre pressure gauge check the pressure of the spare tyre.

If you do not have one, go to the nearest garage and check the air.

It shouldn’t take you too long to change a tyre, probably only around 30 minutes, depending on your experience on doing it and the weather conditions.
